The past few years, there have been protests from workers in the fast food industry regarding raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. Not talking as to the political ramifications but the technological ones, there have been burger flipping machines developed in response to these increased wage calls. Notwithstanding, technology is being used in a variety of ways to revolutionize the food industry.
There is nothing within this industry that can’t be touched by technology. The opening paragraph speaks to the actual making of the hamburgers. If the food preparation worker was to see themselves be supplanted for technology, what else can be affected? The simplest and primary means is online food ordering. Let’s look at a typical pizza shop at its busiest time-Friday/Saturday night.
Customer call in (possibly placed on hold)
1. If they aren't sure of what they wish to eat, they ask for help
2. Worker explains specials to them
3. Customer decides and places order
4. Worker repeats order, gives total, and preparation timeframe
Let's say the above scenario takes five minutes from start to finish. Take this times 20 phone calls. That's 100 minutes used.
Take the above scenario but a person places their order online. All that would need to happen is the worker calls to confirm the time and amount. All in all, let's say it takes one minute to do so times 20 phone calls. The total time is 20 minutes.
The net savings is 80 minutes. For a Friday and Saturday on just one weekend, that's approximately 160 minutes.
Assuming all four weeks in a month have the same level of business, it equals 640 minutes (10.6 hours) verses 160 (2.6 hours). Here's the mathematical breakdown:
10.6 hours x $7.25=$76.85
2.6 hours x $7.25=$18.85
Net savings=$58.
Although this is just a hypothetical look, this is just one benefit having a mobile app can more than pay for half of the investment in the course of one month.
